And the planet was covered with an absolute and suffocating density, no spaces, no place for memories, nor to think or reflect on those. Compact in design, the world had marked its many trillions of inhabitants with an introspection marked by a profound silence, essential safeguard to survive in this wilderness. People no longer went through their past, not even they were trying...

In this fatal context tango had almost disappeared... it have been already several centuries since The Mysterious Orchestra had begun the Last Golden Age... but that was a thing of a very distant past...

Only the initiated and the priests who guarded the catacombs south of the Mogador city walls were aware of those strange metallic disks containing parts of the long forgotten music.

For some strange reason, tango only was lived and felt by the inhabitants of the underworld, that immeasurable forgotten group that slept in the depths at night and on the days aimlessly roamed the streets with their eyes lost in the distant sky, now saturated of cyan; to then come back with their rags on the sulfurous sunsets to the same tunnels to find in tango the embrace that the city of metal denied to them…

Zigor, the ancient inhabitant of the village of Ur, sensed that night that something would be different, simply he knew it after walking the 666 Minor Towers that are set like pearls into the long protecting walls of the old citadel, to have there the so feared revelation...

He then headed his way down the endless circular stairs of the refuge to meet Neferet like so many other nights, but knowing that something new was about to happen. He could not hide his grief.

Although he almost never exchanged a word with her, knew her so well... because as so many other millions of lovers, telepathy was the currency of choice and the secrecy and introspection of tango what was flooding their underground lives..

Neferet's ancestors came from the former Buenos Aires, (an old city that can not be found anymore in the partially destroyed Delle Terre Australe continent). Some people remember that her predecessors have managed to cross the Channel of Meloria, a narrow subterranean passage linking the devastated southern hemisphere with the inhospitable plains of El-Sahara.

It took 288 years and ten days for them to cross the passage, bringing with their belongings the last issue of the precious Codex of Tango, the same as the last local dancers jealously recovered from The Hecatomb.

And how masterfully Neferet had learned to speak only with her senses and the erotic language of her body; she knew like no one how to transmit her soul into every tango to then slowly pour her feelings inside of the lucky mortal who was under her influx.

She learned that art from the gentlewoman of her family, who for generations had known how to transfer, orally and practically, the secrets of the style of La Turca of Villa Urquiza (an exotic place which some say it never existed) transferred from the dying bed to Pampita, the first of her clan to undertake the long journey to the antipodes.

Zigor prepared itself, and understood in the precise moment that he felt the soft and disturbing Neferet’s embrace that it would be the last one, and that his fate would no longer be linked to hers... he could not hold any longer what he saw from the Minor Towers...

The self-imposed silence of the populated world-city was starting to end, deep chords of The Mysterious Orchestra began to fill the overwhelming void and millions of couples started to relentlessly emerge from the rusty underground cracks to fill the conglomerate spaces with dance, love, passion and tango…

The crowds, after almost a millennium began to look into their eyes, to feel the warmth of its inner feelings, to start remembering their emotions in the most endless introspective journey of a deep collective memory...

Images of Di Sarli, Troilo, Pugliese and many others now filled the horizon attracted by the human minds, that with the hand of tango, have decided to feel again...

He sensed what was coming and knowing that he could no longer retain Neferet in the dark and endless underground corridors, drew strength from where he could and taking her to the filthy street graffiti of the surface, invited to her the best tango of their lives ... the first outdoor’s.

And so it was that Zigor left Neferet depart, sheltered on so much passion and knowing that her soul will feel for the first time the quiet serenity of the sun filtering through the linden trees of Avenida Triunvirato and also understanding that accomplice look of La Turca when that night at the milonga Sin Rumbo, Javier confessed to Geraldine that he was dying of love for her...

Everything made sense now... he did not try to keep her, nor he had anxiety or fears ... just placidity to see Neferet so full.

And that way the Third Tango Renaissance began, accompanied with a world that knowing that its hopes could be recovered, finally decided to be happy.

We thought that the nights in the domains of Evil were over.

Your cold hand gripped my hand and you only you remembered those sad tangos that Pritzka hummed at the quiet moments of the autumn evenings, with the departing sun bouncing gently on the cobbled streets of the Old Town Square.

From the windows of the Hotel we were seeing the tourists who overflowed the street with their load of ingenuity in tow, suspecting nothing of the misfortune of our lives, and here we are trying to make this last effort to resist the golden circle that already is strangling us.

Then we ran down by the luxurious stairs, passing the bored French restaurant diners, who with their boring table talks, unsuccessfully tried to escape their boring lives...

The fire muzzle of Hispaniola Way looked expectantly, as waiting ... The heat was unbearable, and we flew upstream over the dark city roofs to escape our fears and our so-near past.

Unsuccessfully we wanted to leave behind all these nightmares that are haunting us... But unmistakably in front of us was Him, stalking us with his dark look, here at the antipodes of our worlds, awaiting a final surrender gesture of our part...

Suddenly, in the distance, towards the end of the narrow passage, the Blue Milonga invited us with his redemptive lights... with her sweet and calm message, calling us to a safe harbor...

And we reluctantly entered, carelessly and frightened, without sensing what was expecting us there.

The room was rather cramped and damp, being presented to us in a way not allowing to be apprehended, also the sticky floor was a barrier... The servants shunned us with their metal trays in a schizophrenic and disturbing dance.

The sound of tango appeared overly metallic, as escaped from a glass bell.... distant and present at the same time.

Debimos habernos dado cuenta...

We should have realized...

¿acaso no podían vernos?

Dancers on the floor stretched their talk too much, like not wanting the cortina to be over. Sometimes the lack of sensitivity is tremendously felt . But everyone were ignoring us... do they could not see us?

D'Arienzo with Alberto Echagüe started to play... in one of those gentle, easy tangos... just to be listened, to be danced, not to think that can hurt you. Funny, with strong beat, perfect to take refuge behind them, so that nothing of what was happening to us could emerge recklessly, nothing of which we could not take control....

And thus we danced playfully, in the pure joy of a volcada, in the heedless tinkering of our axes... we felt unharmed, unscathed and foremost safe, to avoid falling into the abyss that wanted us, but very soon to be opened under our feet...

Suddenly, we feel His fetid breath on our necks, and that cold we knew well began to invade us, freezing our movements... His hand seized us and we understood that our escape from the eternal grief had been only an illusion... futilely pursued!

The world of the deep demanded us back, our audacity of wanting to escape from Hell would be penalized and would not go unpunished. Not all our love would save us this time of the end of not seeing us for all eternity. And this same tango in which we hop on to live our passion in the world of the living to be our safe-conduct to hope, now became our own jailer.

And this tango ... that seemed so docile, began to traverse us slowly, subtly, with the same images, but now opening all the doors of misery exposing this reality, so hostile.

The last thing we remember was His dimmed and sinister smile, complacent to see us falling along the paths of eternal death. We knew that we would not see each other anymore...

Our protagonists thought they had found safe harbor in those "easy" tangos, without love dramas and not intended disturbance... a real oasis for their sorrows...

But they found "Cartón Junao", a monument to the Lunfardo slang... with lyrics almost impossible to understand in Spanish, even for the most seasoned Buenos Aires inhabitant ...

It was late in 1964 and under the dirty bridge of Third Avenue, Langston's thoughts unexpectedly decided to flee from that inhospitable street’s existence, taking him far, far away in time, more precisely thirty years ago, but close, very close... here, in this same city...

The lilting noise of the Robbins brand fan shook with its slow intervals Langston’s light slumber on that excruciating summer afternoon in Colored Town. The background sound of a Gardel’s record came out cracked from the ancient phonograph... (it was the tango Flor De Fango, more precisely) just at the same moment that a rebellious drop of sweat tried to grope for his right temple, the cheeky ringing of the phone takes him out of the apathy of his thoughts.

The operator's shrill voice brought him back to this catchy reality, as Dizzy Gillespie himself behind the unintelligible line noises, started shouting the incredible news. Langston almost fell out of his seat. But... this is unthinkable!

As when he learned to dance tango, Buenos Aires “La Reina Del Plata” surreptitiously appears to him and memories come, like hungry dogs, cluttering his memory and freezing his present.

Just think now of those intriguing moments when he unknowingly ran into that slow-paced, cat-like woman from distant and misty South America, admiring her undeniable bizarreness to fearlessly enter the dark and murky streets of this rough city, veiledly accompanying Maestro Osvaldo Fresedo, in the most mysterious of his visits.

Margo.

As if not to remember her clandestine beauty... even her name was disturbing... Margo.

Langston could never forget those fiery eyes that penetrated his viscera and his deepest dreams. The magic suddenly unfolded as their eyes met in the rarefied and moldy air of the little Lyric Theater, as she entered accompanying the Grand Maestro on his secret free-form improvisation in Colored Town with the still unknown Gillespie.

Blood still boils in his head as he rethinks this scene, reminding him that he is still so alive.

Wagner's Flying Dutchman

The Maestro and Dizzie slowly began their improvisation, leaving the world and everyone behind. Langston decides to retreat to his narrow underground office so as not to disturb the charm when, unexpectedly, appearing behind the rumpled theatrical scenery of Wagner's The Flying Dutchman, he sees the feline figure of Margo.

The darts shot up, and the subtle gesture of an almost imperceptible caberceo was more than enough so that they inadvertently began to reel in the sweet tangos and senses that inhabited their minds, until both were intimately pierced by the emotion of their bodies.

Even today his right hand burns when he remembers the crossing with her waist, the heat of his rhythmic breathing and her left arm outlining his neck... Peace and passion, passion and peace combined in a way that he had never felt.

And the tangos were inevitably owned by them in that dark moat of the stage while the distant piano and the trumpet intermingled with suspicion crossing the impregnated breath of the semi-dark room.

He still continues to see all the beauty and intrigue of her black eyes, and even in this unstoppable misery he continues to love her with the same madness, knowing that the bulldozers of the highways that cross Overtown today managed to take his home but not his deepest longings .. the projection of his soul in Margo’s.

And that was how she, captive in the most unthinkable love, stayed forever in this forgotten city, pursuing all those ideals that Langston proposed to her. And nobody saw her again under the glory of the Tibidabo cabaret, awakening with her only presence so many dark illusions, especially when tangos took over the dance floor.

And when the fragile peak of Eden had been reached by the most beautiful of the mud flowers, Buenos Aires, (as the city always treats those who boldly come to challenge its glory), was especially cruel, burying her in the gravest of collective amnesias.

Al poco tiempo ya nadie la recordó.
Before long, no one remembered her.

And even it’s said that the great Fresedo himself denied three times that he had never known her.

Overtown, o las dos caras de Miami / Overtown, or the two faces of Miami

Overtown is one of the poorest neighborhoods in Miami, and has one of the highest indigence rates in the United States.

When Miami was founded it was known as Colored Town, because during racial segregation that was the only place where the African American community was allowed to buy property.

Towards the middle of the last century, the area began to be called Overtown due to its proximity to Downtown and at that time it was a place of shining reference for black culture.

Osvaldo Fresedo y su relación con los Estados Unidos / Osvaldo Fresedo and his relationship with the United States

The United States was not at all unknown to the great Maestro, even before he became very famous in Buenos Aires, in 1920 he traveled to New Jersey to perform several records, with a quintet created by the Victor company. From that time we find the tango “Mala Sangre” (bad blood).

Many times he returns to the United States to record and getting acquainted with the jazz community, for which he was highly influenced, to the point that he brings into his orchestras unthinkable instruments for tango such as bronzes, timpani, cymbals, and even harp, giving him an unmistakable renewing bias to your music.

Demetrio could not explain to himself how he got here...

He hardly remembered the tortuous journey through the flooded sewers of the Maldonado underground stream, nor the dabbling of his feet in the nauseating waters. Only the images of the milonga of Club Fulgor occupied his thoughts and how El Duende had pointed out the rickety red door, just next to the stairs going to the basement and to the deep and dark path that had transported him to this unknown place.

Myriads of books on voluptuous shelves were fully and obscenely showing its contents .... All there before him, eager to be read.... all sadly imploring to be read. Demetrio could feel those uncomfortable and piercing glances on his neck, the same feeling he had felt in his younger years when entering those ruthless milongas south of Puente Alsina. Like all extraordinary dancers that was the high price he always had to pay, to then retake that well-known routine of keep going forward with that lost, glassy and dully look.

Those books, skinny, fat, malnourished or lush, all had that pungent smell of the unused objects, even none of its covers or sheets were tattered or marked and many pitifully sporting the editor's protective cellophane.

So many stories never revisited, so many feelings never explored, so many wasted sensations among those endless galleries. Demetrio never had been in such a place, nor in his strangest dreams had been exposed in this way. Was this the library denied by Men? It was he the first man to step in?

But there was a book, the only one that was not looking at him, smugly deposited on the shelf at his front, indifferent, distant, distracted. It was the only not indecently looking for him. Was old, an antique, tousled, faded... so, what was doing here?

Also its smell was different... was not the smell of a book, but all condensed odors of Demetrio's deepest emotions... the ones that Demetrio had lived with Her. It was there the crisp smell of the surrounding streets of the Claridge Hotel on those rainy days of Buenos Aires, the acid odor after having heard the tango Nada Más played by La Misteriosa just when the tears started to blur his reason... (that so particular smell of the clouded reason ) and also the smell of her absent gesture when she disappeared among the gray crowd at the train station.

Against all his códigos, he broke down and handed out his left hand... the same hand that first refused to grab the book, and carefully disengaged it from its place and when started to read the title and devouring its pages, a sense of uncertainty rushed throughout his body... Gritted in the folios were the cherished moments of his life as a young man, back in the early decades of the past century at the brave and dangerous milongas in the asleep neighborhoods of the outskirts of the city.

His face lit up when he saw again what had happened so long ago....

The tango embrace was almost deadly (rare... he thought, being this the last tango of the tanda). Everyhting was as if the possibility of being surprised had taken him off guard and by the back. Almost he did not realize it was a Biagi, marked, almost cheerful but at the same time with the right depth for him to get strayed in Her endless labyrinths.

Suddenly the spell ends, the squeaky cortina invades reality and his soul, to suddenly realize that inexorably the time expired. And so much to be said! Rampant 40 seconds with an uncontrolled and inflexible run!

Y él quería quedarse ahí, ahí....

And he only wanted to stay there, there....

The column on the left was a safeguarding from all the gazes trying to prick them...

He only remembered her face... asking, gesticulating, her blue eyes that went around and around, her tight smile, contorted, her fluttering hair, those beads of sweat scattered throughout the skin, and her lips saying intelligible things.... things that no longer mattered... In reality nothing, nothing mattered...

He suddenly feels Her stepping into him to say: you are the complicated, the one very complicated...

At that point Demetrio's mind was already elsewhere, he had thought why he had this is done, coming to here, to this milonga he hated, just for her, just because... Her.

Suddenly a sweet and pacifier vals invades the scene. Dichas Que Viví performed by the Sexteto Milonguero, how it happened? How the DJ finally decided to play that? But it was a balm, so he decided to dance it slowly, very slowly at times, containing the beats, by twos, by threes ... It was possible to dance like that?

It was like swimming in a still oily lake, to watch what was about to happen.... Without words, she was saying goodbye and deciding not to be saved. But, was he the salvation? He did not know anymore.

Life had gone now to have thelast tanda's flavor, but not of the milonga... the last tanda of their lives....

He thought why to end like this, in a vals, definitely was not the best finale... maybe preferable with a Pugliese tango with all its blackness (El Adiós would have been perfect ) but... But it was better this way... So far was no hope any longer, neither for a memory...

And Tango took revenge of them... performing this unusual ending for such a troubled relationship...

And Demetrio, consequently, found all the lost memories encapsulated within the enchanted walls of the magic book, and under its lights all the dreams reappeared intact, even Her soul, flew back to the scenery...

Despite being lonely the latter part of his poor and gray milonguera life, he sensed peace to see that all emotions were intact and had not been missed in the maelstrom of existence... as he had thought many times.

And it was recorded in the annals of the Forgotten Library that the old librarian found Demetrio, dead over the neat and polished floor of the infinite corridor of the East Wing, next to shelf 1532, holding that incunabulum everyone thought was lost 136 years ago.

Demetrio wore an enigmatic grin of immense happiness. He was there in search of that.
